Oyster Cage Cleaning

CRAB participates in an oyster gardening partnership with Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF).  Each August CBF provides oyster spat for the 12 oyster cages that hang from the docks at the Adaptive Boating Center. To keep the spat healthy the cages need to be cleaned monthly. The spat grows over the course of a year and is then harvested by CBF and planted in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. CRAB is proud of the opportunity to connect with the Bay, restore its health and ensure it's accessibility for generations to come. NOTE: This is a somewhat dirty, labor intensive volunteer opportunity. Volunteers should be able to lift 20 pounds and be able to go from down on your knees to a standing position with ease.
